According to Anne Frank herself, ¨I hope Kitty [Anne’s imaginary friend] that I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support.” Anne Frank wrote this passage in her diary before World War II. She wrote this before Hitler invaded the Netherlands. Previous to the war, Anne’s only problems were school, stress, and girl drama. Little did she know that much more troubling times were ahead of her.…
The Diary of Dawid Sierakowiak: Five Notebooks from the Lodz Ghetto, Chil Rajchman’s The Last Jew of Treblinka, and Olga Lengyel’s Five Chimneys: A Woman Survivor’s True Story of Auschwitz are the accounts of three Jewish people who experienced the German’s answer to the Jewish problem from their particular time and place of the “Final Solution”. Sierakowiak’s diary was written while he was living in the Lodz Labor Ghetto with his family and died before he was deported. Rajchman’s and Lengyel’s books are a survivor’s account of their experience at the Treblinka death camp and Auschwitz-Birkenau labor/death camp, respectively. This paper is to compare the experiences between these three people as they suffered much of the same deprivations, yet their experiences ended in different outcomes.…
Night in the book is expressing the dark times of the holocaust which caused many miseries and horrendous pain and death to numerous of jews that have been captured because of their beliefs and religion. The title can be interpreted both literally and figuratively for the meaning of night because the book has inferior effects happening there and figuratively, there was darkness coming to the jews which risked them their lives. In other words, this memoir was one of the dark ages for everyone in sight since the Germans came to their town ruining their peace. For example, everybody was terrified to know that they came to their house.…

A lot took place before and during the Holocaust for Jewish people. The Weissmann and Klein families went through a lot of different experiences that shaped the Holocaust. Through the similarities and differences that will be shown through this paper about their experiences before and during World War 2. Kurt Klein’s family and Gerda Weissmann family were similar in some aspects but there were also lots of ways in how they are different that will be mentioned in this paper.…
Throughout this class, and other history classes I have taken, there has always been little to no mention of women and the specific roles they have played in the Holocaust compared to the plethora of information about men. For this paper, I am going to compare three different stories about the experiences of women during the Third Reich and the Holocaust. Each woman comes from a different background faced varying degrees of misfortune and terror throughout their lives in Nazi Germany. The first woman, Ilse Landau, was a Jew who went into hiding during the war. Second is Marta Hessler, who was neither a Jew or a Nazi, just an ordinary German citizen who knew little about the mass murder.…
One might say I’ve experienced my share of fright, heartache, and disappointment in life. Born in 1940 in Berlin, Germany to a very strict Jewish family, it seemed as though my life was destined to be like any other European Jew at that time: deathly persecution by the ever-present population of anti-semites in Europe. Shortly after the Adolf Hitler rose to power in 1933, my parents, older sister, and I fled to live with my great aunt in Barcelona, Spain. Looking back on that event, I consider myself greatly blessed to have fled from the evil and persecution of the Nazis, for many Jews didn’t have that privilege. Even at a young age while living in Spain, I often felt feelings of guilt, for many of my fellow Jews were being killed by the thousands each day.…
Hidden Like Anne Frank: 14 True Stories of Survival is a nonfiction novel, written by Marcel Prins, about fourteen different Jews who risked their lives tremendously and left behind everything they knew to disappear and go into hiding during World War ll to escape Nazi persecution. All of the stories are first-person accounts that tell what it was really like to go into hiding during the war. Every Jew in this book came from the Netherlands, and they all tell their story of having to leave their families and lives behind; some stayed with relatives or complete strangers and some were only toddlers while some were teenagers. The reason most of these Jews could postpone getting “rounded-up” was because someone in their family worked for the Jewish Council or their father was a…
Throughout this semester, we have written two major papers that really display my capabilities as a writer. By evaluating these two pieces with the learning outcomes established at the beginning of this semester, outcomes 1, 2, and 3 are most applicable when gauging my progress in this course. Learning outcome 1 is, "Demonstrate academic research and writing skills in essays and projects to participate in a scholarly conversation" Learning outcome 2 is, "Demonstrate critical reading through a knowledge of the forms and functions of a variety of texts" Learning Outcome 3 is, "Follow a research writing process that includes developing a topic, locating and evaluating sources (including peer-reviewed), composing in response to those sources, and revising and reflecting on that process;" Each of these outcomes I believe I have met by using them as goals when writing in and out of class. In my essay "Survivors and their Children: Examining the Holocaust's Multigenerational Effects" I discuss the impact the Holocaust has on those who survived it and on their children.…
Have you ever heard of the Holocaust that took place in the 1930’s and 40’s? Have you ever heard of the Nazis that took control in Germany, and everything around it? Well, in the two excerpts, “Until Then I Had Only Read about These Things in Books,” and, the excerpt from Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli, and the poem, “The Guard,” by Jennifer Roy, there are many circumstances in which children are attempting to survive this event. However, the narrators express their feelings, and either have similar feelings toward experiences with the “Jackboots”/Nazis, or different emotions.…
I read the book “Finding Rebecca,” written by Eoin Dempsey. This book is a story about lost and forbidden love during the Holocaust. A Nazi soldier is torn from his Jewish lover by the Nazi occupation. Although this book is fictional it will give a reader the sense of what it was like for the terrorized Jews and also the German soldiers who did not agree with Hitler.…
The animosity assaulting her from every angle since childhood, and the “hateful glances and encounters” she faced every day would have eaten away at the average person (22). Kluger admits that she felt trapped, suffocated by the hostility: “Vienna became my first prison,” she declares, “a city that banished you and then didn’t allow you to leave,” since, without money, one could not afford the papers required to emigrate (26). The never ending barrage of antisemitism began to undermine Kluger’s sense of self, and caused her to question what it meant to be Jewish. Rather than accepting the “Jewish self-contempt” expected of her, Kluger instead discovered “Jewish pride,” choosing to distinguish her own interpretation of Judaism rather than allowing the Nazis to declare it for her…
