As summarised in Graph 1.2, Germany’s economy during these years was characterised by an interesting mix of low GDP growth (tipping into recession during the crisis), declining unemployment, fairly stable inflation and current account surpluses. While economic recovery has been relatively strong compared to other European states, current growth is still slow in Germany and there are concerns around future performance.

Germany’s economy in the lead up to the crisis
The fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of the East and West in 1990 marked the beginning of a new era for Germany, both socially and economically. Table 2.1 shows Germany’s performance against key economic indicators since the early 1990s. This data provides important insight into the economic environment in Germany in the lead up to the financial crisis, which hit the global economy in 2008. It also highlights the problems Germany encountered during the crisis as well as how the economy has recovered since then.
