German Opera Performance Observation

On the evening of March 8th at 7:30 pm, I attended the third concert of the quarter. This specific concert differed from the previous two I have attended—a student piano recital, a concert consisting of two of Cal Poly’s very own talented choirs—as it was an individual student vocal recital. What specifically stood out about this vocal recital was that it consisted of entirely German Opera performance. My roommate is an incredible opera singer, so I am rather accustomed to listening to this style of music, though this was my first ever experience listening and observing German Opera. Prior to each performance, the vocalists repeated a quote that reflected the feeling implied within the composition. There were a total of 17 performances within

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to see Dr. Rachel Whitcomb's performance in PNC Recital Hall, titled "Back on my Feet Again. " This was a country, blues, and bluegrass concert coming from a vocalist and professor with a classical learning background. It centered around a theme that although a knowledge of classical techniques is important for any singer, they should still try to incorporate their own unique musical techniques into their teaching or performance repertoire. The beginning of the concert featured a digital presentation that questioned what "appropriate" music should be considered and who has the authority to decide what should be performed by formal singers. The questions were all rhetorical and would later be answered by Dr. Whitcomb throughout her performance.…

    Musicking The Now Analysis

On the surface, one might not think that the great Italian opera La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and the acclaimed indie group Dinosaur Jr. have much in common. One concert, for instance, took place in an intimate performing arts center to an attentive and quietly reverent audience while the other in a loud, rough-and-tumble rock venue to a lively and informal audience. Indeed, there may appear to be no similarities between the effortlessly skilled classical stylings of the UNT College of Music and the deliberately ramshackle indie sound of Dinosaur Jr. However, with these two concerts, we see Christopher Small’s concept of “musicking” in full effect and, critically, two different forms of the same musical elitism.…

On Monday, I had the pleasure of attending the Voice Majors Recital. This was the first concert/recital that I have attended at Queens College. I walked into the concert hall expecting to see a performance by a large choir. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the first performer walked onto the stage by herself. When the pianist started playing, I looked into the program and noticed the first song was in Italian.…

Me, and classical music we don’t get along that much, but until November 15 at the Eismann Center in Richardson everything changed. For my Concert Critique I was supposed to attend to a Classical music concert, so I was why not take my girl friend since I have a paper I need to write, and a Classical concert that I have never been too. So I got these two tickets for the Plano Symphony Orchestra that was conducted by Hector Guzman. The event was for Stravinsky’s Rite Of Spring.…

When the word “home” is defined in a dictionary you are given definitions like “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered” or “any place of residence or refuge” but to me home means so much more. To me, home is theatre. Those who know me well will attest that the change in me throughout this experience is drastic. Theatre transports me to places I couldn’t dream of otherwise and two years ago, I was taken to a place that would change my life forever and theatre transformed to the place I call home. Thoughts and ideas flooded my mind as I stepped into the off-green colored cafeteria.…

    Opera In The 21st Century

From its birth in renaissance Florence, opera has moved audiences, explored human emotions and experiences from a variety of angles, and encompassed a huge range of musical styles and ideas. Opera came to dominate much of Western music, created heated public debate, served as a medium for political commentary, and constantly searched for new ways to move or persuade its audiences. Yet despite opera’s historical importance and rich heritage, has it reached the end of its journey in the 21st century? With opera houses closing and audience attendance plunging, some critics question opera’s relevance in today’s society and foresee its ultimate demise. To quote Huffington Post reporter, Christopher Ingraham, “Falling album sales and a rash of orchestra…

Walking into the auditorium, I immediately noticed that the atmosphere of the concert was completely different from that of the classical concert I attended weeks earlier. To begin with, it seemed like there was much more of an audience. Everyone seemed excited for the concert to start. As for myself, I was also excited because, on the very front of the program, it said that there was a guest artist that was going to perform with the ensemble. The performers wore more of a business casual look, some were a little more dressed up than others, but overall they looked very well dressed.…

The second part of the program was the Kantorei, acapella. They sang four songs in this order: A tickle by Jonathan Miller, An die Heimat by Johannes Brahms, Wind by Ryan Scott, Ihr Music by Hans Leo Hassler. This part got me so bored. Opera Singer Stereotypes

When most people hear the words “opera singer,” their mind conjures up images of bloated women, plunked down in the middle of a stage, illuminated by a spotlight, dressed in exotic costumes, and screaming at the top of the lungs in even more exotic languages. But frankly that stereotype could not be more wrong; I know that for a fact. If those stereotypes were right, then I would not be writing this paper. I love opera. I have been addicted to it for over five years now, and the fire that burns within me has no signs of burning out any time soon.…

A magnificent rounded auditorium shining with golden adornments, a ceiling that made me crane my neck to fully appreciate its vastness, and over 2,500 people in five tiers of seating truly took my breath away. Even so, the setting of Carnegie Hall couldn’t compare to the astonishment I felt when I sang there. In 2014, my concert choir was selected to be part of a 200 voice choir in a PERFORMING a Christmas concert at Carnegie Hall. We received our composition around a month before the December concert, and honestly, it didn’t seem to be anything special. We were part of a background choir after all.…

At the Wolf Trap Theater, on August 5th, I saw the opera La Boheme. La Boheme is a love story between a poet named Rodolfo and seamstress named Mimi. The opera explores ideas of true love and the bitter sweetness of reminiscing past lovers. This opera was based on the novel, Scenes de la vie de Boheme by Henri Murger. The music was written by Giacomo Puccini, an Italian composer who lived during the Post-Romanic Period, and is well known for his opera compositions.…
