German Music: Die Feen By Richard Wagner

Improved Essays
The reason I chose Wagner was because of his interesting background. Being from Germany myself, I can relate better to a German composer than any other composer just because I grew up under a German culture. What is specifically interesting about Wagner that separates him from all the other composers is that he his music pieces appealed to Adolf Hitler. His music was apparently played at concentration camps, which was used to re-educate the prisoners. This created a lot of controversy, which made people reject his great pieces of work for a long period of time. “Die Feen”, the first opera he wrote, in specific sounds very calm to my ears. As the piece continues it has a battle like feel to it; probably the reason Hitler liked his music so much.

The song also brings out a heroic and celebratory mood. The song was released shortly after Beethoven had lost his hearing ability. He said that “it shall not bend or break me completely,” which relate directly to his music which he describes the struggle as “fate” which “knocks at the door.” This song is kind of a narrative which he uses to show he’s a hero. The heroic life struggle is described in the opening of the song in C minor to the transition to C major as the song comes to an end which shows a progression of emotions.…

This camp [Terezin] was a musically oriented camp, using the music they played to manipulate, and morph the minds of the prisoners ("Verdi 's "Requiem"). “‘There’s been much written about how the Nazis used art and culture in Terezin in order to present a different picture than what was really happening,” ("Verdi 's "Requiem"). Hitler’s entire theme for his regime was all based around the music and art that flooded the culture of his rule ("Music of the Holocaust"). “The Nazis gave Terezin special status as a model camp. There, the prisoners usually initiated musical activities,” ("Verdi 's "Requiem").…

Imagine a story in which instead of everything a King touches turning to gold, the things simply die. In Franz Schubert’s Erlkönig, a musical work based on a poem by Goethe, the legend goes that anyone touched by the Elf King dies. There are many aspects that help contribute to the work itself and the story heard throughout the piece. The composition and surrounding stylistic era influenced the work, the composer himself added touches of his own personal style, and the piece helped to represent the Elf King legend. While there are many components that contribute to the composition of Erlkönig, the origin and form of the piece are a major part of the story behind the music.…

In his lieder inspired by Klaus Groth’s “Es hing der Reif”, Brahms highlights both the dreamy and nightmarish aspects of fixating on love by floating in-between the relative keys of A minor and C major, introducing foreign “problematic” harmonies and chord members, and implying a strong sense of irony when concluding lines and stanzas. By never truly establishing a key until the very last lyrical statement, Brahms keeps the piece suspended in a dreamy uncertainty. This is evident even as early as the first piano introduction, where a sighing figure first implies C major (m. 1), and then is repeated in the dominant of A minor (m. 3). This sighing figure is apparent through the entirety of the lieder, often bringing priority to the minor implications…

This fifth concerto is comprised of woodwinds featuring the flute, string instruments featuring the violin, and of course the prized harpsichord. This piece does something groundbreaking. It is the only one of the six pieces to have any solo material given to the harpsichord . In this time, Bach was known for using the Harpsichord, but not in this capacity. Throughout the piece, it seems to hold everything together as the one constant stringing together other instruments.…

The instrumental musical piece from the Classical Period that I chose to discuss this week is Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 Second Movement: Andante con moto, composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. This instrumental musical piece forms part of the larger multi-movement Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67. Beethoven is one of my favorite Classical Period composers and…

The symphony, and the four-note opening motif in particular, are known worldwide, with the motif appearing frequently in popular culture, from disco versions to rock and roll covers, to uses in film and television. Since the Second World War it has sometimes been referred to as the "Victory Symphony".[2] "V" is the Roman character for the number five; the phrase "V for Victory" became well known as a campaign of the Allies of World War II. That Beethoven's Victory Symphony happened to be his Fifth (or vice versa) is coincidence. Some thirty years after this piece was written, the rhythm of the opening phrase – "dit-dit-dit-dah" – was used for the letter "V" in Morse code, though this is probably also coincidental.[3] The BBC, during World…

Throughout the Adagio movement of Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major, we are presented with several different juxtaposing textures, each offering a new perspective with its experience. The dialectic forces of this movement could also be found within layers of Image A. The antiphony at the onset and again in later references can be heard as soft (in a texture sense), open, and even vague in its harmonic and rhythmic structure. The instructed una corda gives an airy and empty quality to the piano’s timbre then, the entrance of the strings functions as a focusing energy, very clearly showing us the pulse and tonic. The tone of the string is itself more vivid and precise than a piano being played una corda.…

The song Sound of Silence written by Paul Simon in 1964 is an inspirational masterpiece. Since its creation, it has taken on many meanings, and has been deciphered by many fans. One such deciphering has it linked to secret societies, not in an Illuminati sense, but as a way of showing how to stay true to one’s beliefs. The story of the poem involves a man telling his dream to the audience. Walking down a road of stone in the dead of night, he comes across a large group of people praising an idol that they themselves created.…

In Brahms Academic Festival Overture my first impressions were this song is a light weight but then I heard the sounds become over the top, festive. Brahms symphony was limited with instruments, such as: cellos, double basses, violas, violins, bassoons, clarinets, flutes, oboes, French horns, trumpets, trombones and timpani. What gave the light weight and airy affect was the strings and the bassoons gave an accented popping sound. The string section build up though a crescendo. The small brass section consists of French horns, trumpets and trombones.…

Music in Germany is widely important throughout the whole country. Classical music is by far the most significant type of music; it’s not uncommon for younger children to start off on learning to play instruments or even join orchestras. The main reason why young German children are introduced to music early on in life is so they can learn about all kinds of different forms of music and to also influence the younger generations to partake in all different kinds of music. German music isn’t just popular in the country itself, but in others as well. The United States has been widely influenced by all types of German music, especially classical.…
