Cultural Interview Questions

I had the opportunity to meet a young man from Germany, Thassilo, who has been staying with my family and he was very excited to help me with this assignment by answering interview questions. The interview questions were on different subjects including their cultural beliefs and values, differences in family between Germany and the United States, beliefs of counseling, head of household, religious belief, faith and the church, adjustments to being in the United States, similarities of Germany and the United States, language barriers, and what he wanted to share as the most important thing about Germany. We were able to converse with each other and learn from each other in regards to his personal culture. Throughout this paper discussion will be on what was learned of Thassilo’s culture, German culture as described in articles, counseling in Germany, and a new approach used in Germany for troubled youth. The German culture is known for their love of dancing, music and the outdoors (Goldman, 1997). The type of music can vary depending on the person. In Germany, families attend church together however they don’t have the faith focus which he has witnessed since being in the United States. The focus of faith for Thassilo is based on what he has learned from others, as his family doesn’t attend church often. When talking with Thassilo he was fascinated with the amount of prayer he has witnessed as it is not the case in the German culture. Germany doesn’t rely on their faith to get through crisis but more on family to help them. When there is a personal crisis the family will come together and assist with making decisions, look for ways to solving the crisis, and always stand by the family
