Currently, the world has 421 million people that are 65 years and older (Novak, 53). However, by 2050, it is estimated that the world will have one and a half billion people who are 65 years and older. As a result, there will be more elderly people than children in the world. One reason for the trend of growth of population of people, which were 65 years and older between 1900 and 2010 is, the medical technology and advances. Also, another trend was the migration to the United States. This was more of a trend in the early 1900’s when there were lots of people immigrating to the U.S. However, this trend in current time does not have the effect on the population as it did in the 1900’s. Another trend in the past was, the infant mortality rates dropped significantly during this 1900’s. According to our textbook, Issues in Aging, “Today and in the future, population aging will occur mostly because of increased longevity (Novak 65).” The last trend in the U.S. population is the decline in the fertility rate and birth rate. An increase in birth rates increased shortly following World War l and before the year of 1920. Secondly, the increase was due to the number of immigrants coming to the U.S. in the 1900’s and then starting their families. Then, following World War ll marked the start of the “baby boom” period. At this time, many people during the years of 1946 and 1964 had children. According to Novak, 78.2 million babies were born between these years. In the years 2010 and 2011 started the “baby boomers” first entered into the age group of 65 and older. This age group will continue to grow old and in the year 2050, they will be in the oldest-old age
