Geriatric Nursing: Developing a Dedicated Education Unit in Long-Term Care: A Pilot Project The purpose of this article to find a way to establish a way for nurses to teach nursing students in the clinic setting. Nursing programs constantly have to turn away qualified students because of the shortage of faculty. This research is appropriate in obtaining enough faculty in order to stop turning away future nursing students. The main point of this model is to create a way were the nursing staff can serve as the clinical teachers for nursing students in the clinical setting. On top of that, another advantage to the DEU is having a nurse right there to answer all of your questions you may have. Without the DEU there would be between six and eight students that would have questions waiting to be answered. The nurse can also evaluate a nursing student’s strengths and weaknesses which will help them in the long run in becoming a nurse. It is important to understand your strengths and weaknesses to better yourself as a nurse. The DEU is also a great way to have former students of the DEU become staff nurse to teach new students in the future. This will keep the program going and hopefully fix the shortage of nursing staff. Nishiokia, Coe, Hanita, and Mascato results showed, that compared to nurses on traditional units, DEU nurses were more likely to agree that their unit welcomed students, had a strong commitment to teaching, and received professional development from clinical faculty.
