Geriatric depression is a disease that, if left untreated, can lead to a multitude of physical and mental health problems. This disease needs to be an area of increased focus because nearly 20% of the older population (twice the rate of younger individuals) experiences depression, and currently, only half of seniors with mental health problems gets treatment of any kind, and less than 3% get treated by a mental health specialist (Health Magazine). Depression in the elderly is characterized by many of the same symptoms that are found in younger individuals with depression.
