Gerasim Foil

Improved Essays
In The Death of Ivan Ilych, Gerasim is Ivan Ilych’s assistant to the butler, but then becomes Ivan’s nurse when his death is drawing near. Gerasim is in the lower class, also known as a peasant. In the story Gerasim and Ivan foil each other in aspects of social class, age, attitude, and honesty. Unlike Ivan, Gerasim is direct. He is the only person who is open with Ivan, and is comfortable enough to discuss death with Ivan. Out of Ivan’s family, friends, and doctors Gerasim is the only one who will tell Ivan that he will die, due to his accident. In chapter six, Gerasim says to Ivan “We shall all of us die …” (Tolstoy 1017). This is the only time some one has said to Ivan to his face that we should all die. Through out the story, other character are glad that it wasn't them, but have yet to realize that we will all die. Peter is a character who likes to hide from death, in the first chapter he said “Well, he’s dead but I’m alive!” (990). Similar to Peter, many other characters are glad it wasn't them. Many other people talk behind Ivan’s back and are not direct with him, unlike Gerasim. …show more content…
For example, when his wife, Praskovya was pregnant, Ivan was very distant to her by absorbing his life with work so he wouldn't have to be home. Praskovya’s pregnancy went against Ivan’s four principals of his life, “easy, agreeable, gay and alway decorous” (999). He was never there to comfort his wife and take care of her, because it made his life the opposite of what he wanted. On the other hand, Gerasim was there for Ivan in his time of need and was there to comfort him. In chapter seven comforted Ivan by lifting his legs and talking to him, “Gerasim did it all easily, willingly, simply, and with a good nature that touched Ivan Illych” (1016). Ivan and Gerasim foil each other in this nature when it comes to care and comfort to others. One may believe that their differences in compassion may relate to their social

Next, Anna Bruner is a character in the book called Traitor by Gudrun Pausewang. She is a warm-hearted person. For example, when Anna went to help the soldier by giving him as many things as she could even though they weren’t very wealthy, “She put as many can of beans as she could in the bag, she also took the potato sack and a small pot. She found an old pillow and a blanket at the attic where her big brother Felix’s old clothes were stored ” (Pausewang 109). This shows that Anna is a warm-hearted person, though, she did not know the man, and all she knew about him was that he was a soldier who has escaped, she was determined to still help him by giving him all of what she…

In Golding’s book, The Lord of the Flies, British schoolboys crash land on a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean. A foil character can sometimes contrast one character with another in order to highlight particular qualities of the main character. In the fictional novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Atticus Finch, as the main character, and Bob Ewell, the minor character, to showcase the kind nature of Atticus Finch. The author uses these two characters to illustrate the overall theme of the novel, which is “Successful parenting may sometimes be viewed in a different perspective depending on whose eyes it is seen through.” Atticus is the father of Scout and Jem Finch, and he has a very sapient and deferential way of parenting his children. On the other hand, Bob Ewell is a very unenlightened and lackadaisical man, who is the father of eight children,…

Despite the widespread controversy and questionable motivations of the Vietnam War, a study conducted shows that 74% of Vietnam veterans would serve again, even knowing the outcome (Roush). This statistic makes sense, because according to the same report 2/3 of the soldiers were volunteers, not conscripted soldiers. Tim O’Brien’s novel, The Things They Carried, although a fictional book, very accurately depicts the hardships faced on a normal basis by soldiers serving in Vietnam. The author rarely talks about himself during the war in the book. He instead focuses on describing the other men in his platoon, characterizing them by the unique objects they physically carry with them and the emotional burdens they hold onto both during and after…

As a strong woman of the French Revolution, she possesses a number of allies and motives related to the cause. Madame Defarge and her husband own a wine shop in France that is introduced with the vivid scene of wine spilled all over the streets along with the excited response of the poor people around. This scene parallels to the blood spilled throughout the course of the French Revolution, catalyzed in part by Madame Defarge.…

One day, as Gerasim is leaving the room he explains that “he did not find his work a burden because he was doing it for a dying man and that he hoped that someone would do the same for him when his time came,” (Tolstoy, 104). Gerasim cares for Ivan not only because he is goodness personified, but because he hopes for some kind of retribution when he is dying. In applying a sense of self-love to Gerasim, Tolstoy expands the character complexity of the peasant. In combination with Gerasim’s clean and healthy appearance, Tolstoy thus expands his guidelines for leading an honest life to include an acceptable level of self-preservation. Tolstoy does not use Gerasim to portray a stereotypical impoverished peasant who gives his entire life to others at the expense of his own self.…

The work beings with Ivan’s death and those around him are more concerned with themselves and how they will benefit from the passing instead of grieving the loss of the friend, husband, and father. Instead, Ilyich’s coworkers are wondering who will be offered the promotion in his place and his wife asks a lawyer questions about his pension. In my understanding, this part of the book is to emphasize the unawakening and ignorance of society and of those around Ivan Ilyich, a reason behind why his unsatisfaction with life is so severe. The few who are actually seen mourning his death are his young son and his servants, those in life who do not care for…
