Geraldine Largay of Tennessee, according to her personal journal became disoriented July 2013 when she left the Appalachian Trail to use the bathroom. She was 66 years old, and an avid hiker. A report released Wednesday, May 25, 2016, by the Maine Warden Service stated that Geraldine Largay became lost after leaving the Appalachian Trail in Maine. Documents show she survived at least 26 days after getting lost. Her remains were discovered in October 2015.
Largay had in her pack the hikers' "10 essential" list, which included food, water, shelter, maps, a compass, lighters, a signal whistle and cell phone. According to the warden's service, she was equipped to survive in the woods while awaiting rescue. Hundreds turned out to search for the lost hiker. Her cell phone could not receive a signal and her GPS device was left behind in her motel room. She had hiked over 800 miles in the last several months, so she was no novice, and yet was described as having average abilities when it came to survival techniques. She did everything right to a point.
According to the warden's report she "tried to start a fire", it was not clear if she managed to or not, and if she could not then why not, she had several lighters and obviously knew how to create a fire. A fire would have increased her visibility, and no one heard a whistle
