Sandusky was charged and convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse of children. The crisis that brought the scandal to light was Sandusky taking a shower with an 11-year-old boy in the Lasch Building on the Penn State Campus. In May of 1998, the boy's mother filed a complaint with the University Police Department after he coming home with wet hair. An investigation was conducted by Detective Ronald Shreffler and reported to the District Attorney. Ray Gricar, Centre County District Attorney, refused to prosecute. Shreffler testified before the grand jury that the campus police director, Thomas Harmon, advised him to drop the case. The boy's mother confronted Sandusky about the accusation. Sandusky admitted to showering with other boys and refused to discontinue his behavior. As a result, only a reprimand was issued prohibiting Sandusky from showering with children. Two victims recounted oral sex with Sandusky, sometimes culminating in his ejaculation. In 2000, James Calhoun, Penn State janitor, reported observing Sandusky giving oral sex to an unidentified boy. In 2012, Calhoun was in a nursing home suffering from dementia. He was not competent enough to testify. In 2005, District Attorney Gricar disappeared and was not available to testify. On November 9, Penn State University fired long-time coach Joe Paterno and president Graham Spanier four days after Sandusky was initially arrested. Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, school officials, resigned from their posts. They were accused of perjury and failing to report suspected child abuse. On June 22, 2012, the jury reached a verdict finding Sandusky guilty on 45 of the 48 counts against him. Following the announcement of the verdict, Judge John Cleland immediately revoked Sandusky's bail and ordered him to be taken into custody to await sentencing.
