After reading about Dr. Gerald Napoles’s impressive background, rise to the presidency in a short amount of time and his ability to utilize a servant leadership framework, gives hope to new leaders in the community college arena. The overview describing Dr. Napoles characteristics aligns directly to the servant leadership style that he owns.

One of the points made by Dr. Napoles is he “believes in servant leadership and uses that framework in all of his actions." This comment led me to consider the similarities and differences between transformational leadership (this class) and servant leadership. According to Transformational versus Servant Leadership: A Difference in Leader Focus A Difference in Leader Focus (2003), reveals many basic

In previous assignments, I distinguished between authentic and servant leadership approaches. Authentic leadership focuses on qualities that help leaders to be perceived as trustworthy and believable by their followers (Northouse, 2012). One of the many strengths of authentic leadership is that it fulfills a need for trustworthy leadership (Northouse, 2012). According to Northouse (2012), servant leaders put followers first, empower them, and help them develop their full personal capacity. Servant leaders build strong relationships with others by giving followers the support they need, involving them in decisions, and building a sense of…

DCCCD is a large district for new students and employees to navigate. New employees are not able to see the big picture of leadership because of the time and attention to detail at the campus level. One campus in particular, North Lake, a sister college of the district, has its own campus president, President Slekjo, who reports directly to the Chancellor of DCCCD. President Slekjo currently has the following leadership practices and or responsibilities at North Lake- to provide strategic leadership to the campus in order to ensure North Lake remains in formation with the overall district, board of trustees and Chancellors’ initiatives, to be the liaison between the college and the community so that businesses, social organizations and students…

Garrett Not only caring about my spiritual being, my Pastor, Ronald Gene Garrett, has really impacted my life as a young man by being an awesome role model. Through leadership, he has always leaded and instructed me down the right paths. As a righteous moral man, he has taught me to be honest in all my dealings, morally-upright, and to help my fellow man in any way possible. Most of all, not having a dad while growing up, he did a fine job filling in, loving me and making me the man I am today.…

Leadership styles include democratic, autocratic, laissez-faire as well as servant leadership. Of the varied styles, servant leadership is the most appealing and interesting to study as it draws attention to the servant leader, “as one who is a servant first” (Greenleaf, 1977). Likewise, Spears and Lawrence (2002) have suggested that at its core, servant leadership is a long-term, transformational approach to life and work (p. 4). Over the years, many leaders have emerged and because of their actions, performance, and traits they are hailed as servant leaders. This includes, but is not limited to: Pope Francis, also known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker, Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, and W.E.B. Du Bois.…

One opportunity in my life that I am grateful for is the chance to participate in the FBISD Leadership 101 and 102 programs. Not only was it eye opening to see leadership across different career fields and connect with fellow young leaders, I learned about the true basis of leadership. Leadership is based on selfless volunteerism. No matter what field they work in, leaders are those who go above and beyond the call of duty to improve the community, often with little appreciation or compensation. For example, business and selfless volunteerism don’t usually go hand in hand.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

I have been blessed to be a part of my Leadership class for the past three years now, and have lived off the motto of “service above self” because of it. Looking out for others and putting their thoughts and emotions before mine, has ultimately lead to a more sustainable environment at school where spirits and emotions are brighter with the students. By being given the opportunity to embrace this involvement, I aspire to bring my understandings to Santa Clara University. I believe that I can embrace Santa Clara’s visions, especially that of educating capable leaders to build a more humane world. Conclusively because I’ve already witnessed this type of vision at my own school.…

The Servant by James C. Hunter provides a foundation and an understanding of true leadership. Through the lives of John Daily and five other struggling leaders on a retreat, Hunter uses Brother Simeon to explain the principles of servant leadership, which causes John and the others to reflect deeply on their character, trust, and commitment. Creating and deepening the principles described by Brother Simeon will enhance one’s leadership perspective and will prove to be beneficial for a school principal. “Leadership is the skill of influencing people to work enthusiastically toward goals identified as being for the common good” (Hunter, 2012, p 28). To influence people, you must build authority, which is done when you identify and meet the…

Personal Philosophy of the Student Affairs Field Reflecting on my personal college experience and those of my peers, I believe that the field of Student Affairs provides a unique and even essential opportunity to help shape the experience that student’s receive within the university setting. I strongly believe that students gain more from their college experience learning and growing outside of the classroom rather than inside. Self-discovery and personal exploration through extra-curricular activities and interpersonal interactions guide students through their academic careers and develop who they wish to become as an adult facing the “real world.” Student Affairs professionals help to ensure that each student begins their track to self-discovery…

Since the students interviewed are seniors, they have seen a lot of transition with the CCE which has led them to be unsure of the guidance given. I can still remember the day when my parents told me the phrase, “You are a leader, not a follower.” It was in kindergarden right after I told them about a few girls who were making fun of a friend of fine, and I decided to stop them and defend her. When my parents told me that phrase, it definitely stuck with me throughout my life. I think that’s a phase most kids hear time to time in their childhood. It’s that phrase that makes you question, what it a leader?…
