Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1914. However, he grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ford’s birth name was Leslie King, Jr.; he was named after his father. His mother was, Dorothy Ayer Gardner Ford. Ford attended South High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Later his parents got divorced because his father was a wife beating alcoholic. Leslie King Jr. did not learn about his biological father until he was a teenager. While being a football player, his team won the national championship in 1932, 1933, and 1934. He was voted most valuable player for the Michigan Wolverines. In 1935, he graduated from the University of Michigan and continued his law degree at Yale. While he was at Yale, he took on jobs as a football and boxing coach. On January 1, 1935, Ford got the chance to play on soldier field against the Chicago Bears in the Chicago tribune All-Star game. After his amazing performance he got offers to play for the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers. Ford was named to the honor society both in the ¨All-City¨ and ¨All-State¨ football teams. In 1935, he was named to Sports Illustrated Silver anniversary for the All-American football team.
