Last summer, I was an undergraduate researcher at UNT’s CASCaM. There, I delved into the mind-boggling world of quantum modeling, molding chemical structures like a child would Play-Doh. But I was far beyond the comfort of the classroom – I was in a completely unfamiliar environment, faced with an ocean of alien names, figures, and concepts.
I loved it. As I modeled catalysts in lab, I scoured the web at home, filling my browser with papers and Wikipedia articles. Each question sprouted two more, leading me deeper down the rabbit hole. Though I know I’ve only scratched the surface of knowledge, I’ve learned more of the quantum chemical world than I’ve ever dreamed of. Far from scare me away, it’s this prospect of discovery that drew me into lab each day. To face a vast unknown, to uncover it for yourself – that is what is most exciting for me. …show more content…
This hunger for innovation is what draws me to engineering at Georgia Tech. Through Georgia Tech’s emphasis on student involvement, I’d have countless opportunities to make that impact beyond the classroom, from pioneering new technologies as an undergraduate researcher to experiencing career fields through the Co-op program. But what truly highlights Georgia Tech for me is its global reach of community and collaboration. Its student-led Invention Studio provides a powerful example of the local student culture of cooperation, while its emphasis on study abroad programs attests to its dedication to tackling universal problems.
