Georgia State University: Personal Statement

Improved Essays
I began my educational journey at Georgia State University as an enthusiastic pre-medicine major with a very unrealistic goal of taking on the world.I told myself I would sacrifice anything to become a doctor, including accepting the possibility of never having children due to how hard it would be for me to spend quality time with them.I constantly worried about the finances required for my education, if my parents had the necessary funds to pay their bills, and much more.As far as my academic performance, I was never satisfied with my science grade point average. I felt inferior to my classmates who seemed to absorb and comprehend information at a faster rate in comparison to me. To make matters worse,I had to constantly fight the urge to daydream in my Chemistry lectures.Somehow I just was not the same little girl that loved the sciences anymore.I was bored and knew that Chemistry 1211k was not the last of Chemistry classes that I would have to take.I continued to persevere through Chemistry because I honestly wanted to devote my life to helping other people. In the midst of pursuing my unhealthy dream, I led a very unbalanced lifestyle.

Another out-of-state graduated shared with me that he graduated with a 3.3 GPA, and he completed his college education in five years. He shared that his academic success was based on holding himself accountable as to rather he wanted to go to college or not. He didn’t believe that he had to overcome factors, but he knew that his parents could not afford to pay his tuition, but he received financial aid as well as scholarships to pay for it. He didn’t see being an African American male as a disadvantage in attending Morehead State University. He had heard chatter of ethnic conflicts, but it never interrupted his goals though he felt that this may affect others.…

Five years ago my educational standards for myself were extremely low. Although I was expected by my family to receive a post secondary education, I had no motivation to do so nor did I care. I just did not have any ambition to be successful. At that time, I thought to myself that I did not need to continue school after I received my high school diploma. Also, I kept thinking that college was not for everyone and it most definitely was not for me.…

Berry College has completely changed my life for the better. Since coming here, I've grown so much as a person- I've met incredible people, I've learned both in and outside of the classroom, and I've had countless memorable experiences on this campus. With the help of both faculty and friends, I've become a more confident and self-assured person. For example, I never thought I would have the courage to try and tackle Shakespeare, but thanks to supportive faculty and encouraging fellow students, I'm a part of the cast of The Tempest. This school has gone above and beyond to help me realize my potential and exactly what I am capable of.…

Each college student knows what it is like to constantly worry whether or not the score on the ACT is high enough to get accepted into a school or if certain AP credits will transfer to the school of choice. It’s my junior year of high school, and I had just begun looking at colleges and universities I believed would suit me personally and educationally. Each school was severely critiqued on certain elements they had to offer, such as, majors/minors, clubs and organizations, pre-professional programs, and even extracurricular activities. This was going to be the place I would ultimately spend the next four years of my life, so I needed to make the perfect decision.…

Prior to high school, my middle school recommended that I attend “Grant High School”, which was looked down upon by my parents due to its reputation. Grant High School only has a 78% graduation rate. My father had been planning on surprising me with an opportunity of a lifetime and began planning since I was in 7th grade. I left my friends and current life behind to move to a place called Oak Park to attend Oak Park High School, which is ranked in the top 100 public schools in the nation and a graduation rate of 99%. I truly believe this is the reason I am here at San Diego State University today, because I was given an opportunity I may not have received by attending Grant High School.…

My leadership crucible did not take place in my military leadership tenure but as senior in college at North Georgia College and State University. The experience of serving as a fraternity president during a time of probation helped shape me into the organizational leader I am today. My fraternity experienced an unfortunate alcohol related event leading it to serve a one-year probation period. At the same time, my peers elected me as President of the fraternity to lead it during this time of adversity and eventually off probation. The presidency presented numerous challenges including morale issues, sharing a common focus, making difficult decisions and working with executives on the school advisory board.…

On Wednesday, September 21st, the junior and senior class of my school went to Franklinton High School—where we were introduced to post-secondary institutions such as state universities and local community colleges. I admittedly already had a fair idea of what I planned on doing after school. My “carefully thought-out plan” was this: I would go to Northshore Technical Community College in the summer to get my CNA so that I can gain the patient-care experience necessary for my later plans for college. I would then attend LSU for four years and earn a bachelor’s in dietetics, and possibly minor in psychology. Afterward, I would attend a PA school somewhere within the US—possibly the one at LSU.…

On a sweltering summer day in the City of Atlanta or the “ATL” as it is affectionately known today, I visited my best friend while he visited his father for the summer. That day I remember vividly because as soon as we stepped outside of the airport to take the “MARTA” train, I began to sweat profusely. Anyone that has been to Atlanta during the summer knows it is incredibly humid there. A week earlier I had seen my friend, and we planned out what we were going to do that week I visited. I knew I wanted to visit Spellman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College, but before I could visit the Atlanta University Center or the “AUC” as it is called to the locals, I felt compelled to visit the grave site of one of the most influential human being to walk this earth.…

“Come with me to the welfare office or there won’t be any food for the month,” my mom vocalized to me. This was mainly caused by the lack of focus I had because of my attention to provide for my family.…

From a very young age I suffered from a chronic intestinal disorder which went improperly treated until I was 18. This was resultant of the necessary medication being potentially fatal for minors. When I finally was able to start on the medication it changed my life, however at that point I only had a month of high school left and there was nothing I could do to remedy my awful grades. The reason I had done so poorly was due to the copious amount of school I was always missing as a result of this disorder; thus, I was always playing a hopeless game of catch up with my work. Prior to starting on the medication, I had lost motivation and drive in my schoolwork as I felt there was nothing I could do no matter how hard I tried that would lift my grades.…
