Georgia’s Flag Evolution
Chronological Order
Introduction There are seven Georgia’s flag including an unofficial flag. Georgia is in continent of North America and is in the southeast. The colonization began in 1732, founded by James Oglethorpe with the help of King George the Second. Oglethorpe wanted to help the poor and debt people in London. Since they needed to protect their colony from Spain, so they needed weapons, uniforms, and a flag to represent Georgia. Flags in Georgia have been evolved many times over years. Perry who is a state senator and a former Confederate major, gave Georgia militia units an official flag. But the General Assembly changed the flag. The flag has a blue vertical line on the left side, and on the right side shows three horizontal line, showing a pattern which is red, white, and red. Since there was no state coat of arms, the flag has different versions.
Georgia’s 2nd Official Flag In 1902-1920, the lawmakers added the state coat of arms to the blue vertical line. In 1920, the design on the flag has changed again without the legislative. Instead of the state coat of arms, it changed into the Great Seal of the State of Georgia. Georgia’s 3rd Official flag In 1956, the change happened by one of the people in Legislation creating the new flag was Sen. Jefferson Lee Davis. They replace the flag horizontal bars on the right part with the Confederate battle flag. In the article, says that Gov. Marvin Griffin declared that “There will be no mixed races in schools and college when I’m around”. So meaning that public schools, swimming pool, parks, and playgrounds are segregated. The voters has to say yes or no if they wanted to keep the current flag. The current flag got rejected and a new flag came. However, a revised bill called HB 380, replaced the 2001 flag with thirteen-star version of the first national fag of the confederacy called Stars and Bars and with the Georgia state seal in the center of the stars including the words “In God We Trust in blue on the white bar of the flag. If HB 380 be approved by General Assembly, then the new flag will become official immediately after signing by the governor. Most of the voters approved HB 380, so the new flag became the 5th official
