Georgia Douglas Johnson Your World Poem Analysis

Georgia Douglas Johnson was acknowledged as being gay or bisexual female poet. After my initial reading of her poem titled “Your World”, I felt that it was very uplifting and inspiring, and gives a message about setting goals and conquering the world. She used very bold words and phrases in her poem such as “my wings pressing close to my side” as if she was a bird preparing to take flight and explore the world (p. 63). The overall message is not to be afraid or be fearful of the unknowns, just plan, go and do great things.

Reading the poem a second time with a gay perspective does change the meaning a bit for me. I also interpret songs differently after finding out that the singer is actually gay. I automatically assume that the song now
