It was the end of junior year when Wieman nominated several people, myself included, to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security in Washington D.C.. I had never been to the East coast so I jumped at the chance to go. It was extremely costly but strings were pulled and I actually came up with the $2000 tuition. My flight was at 6:45 a.m. and I was supposed to be up at 5:30. Unfortunately for me, due to my overwhelming

If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

I had just entered my junior year in high school and was back to playing football, my grades were good so far and my A.D.D. medication was helping me a lot. Zach and I had just arrived at the union school for a junior varsity game against Oceanside high school, we geared up and got ready for the game. I started the game at quarterback and the game wasn't going well for us, which didn't come as a surprise because jv games are never enjoyable. I took the snap and rolled out to the left side of the field, no one was open so I tucked the ball under my arm and started to run up field, I had room to move, suddenly a linebacker running at me from my side started to shorten up his steps and set himself for a tackle, he tackled low but I…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

My most positive high school experience for me has to be when I was inducted into National Honor Society for my senior year. This was something that I has been striving to do since my freshman year after I received my first academic letter. But after our school decided to only allow seniors to be inducted, raised the GPA requirement, and reduced the amount of people that would be allowed to be inducted I wasn’t sure if my goal would still be attainable. But after three years of strenuous classes, constant volunteer service, and keeping my grades up I finally received an acceptance letter and was inducted into NHS where I am able to surround myself with others that have the same academic goals as…

At Taft, it’s easy to dismiss the struggles of the rest of the world as mere articles in the news. With the help of this trip, I will force myself to first step out of my comfort zone and experience a culture entirely new to me, and then allow myself to become a more active and aware citizen of the world. For the first time in my life, I will be entirely independent of what I know as normal.…
