1.1- History and Inventions
George Westinghouse Jr. was a great inventor and pioneer in the electrical industry. Westinghouse was born in Central Bridge, New York, in 1846, the eighth of ten children. His father, also named George, manufactured farm …show more content…
George Westinghouse’s first venture into the area of incandescent lamps was with the Westinghouse two-piece, all-glass stopper lamp that was used to illuminate the Chicago World’s Fair (Columbian Exposition) in the year 1893. Thomas Edison sued George Westinghouse and other manufacturers of incandescent lamps for patent infringement but his sheer genius and resolve urge him to modify design [10].
He then started working on stopper lamp that unlike Edison invention did not use vacuum. As another design modification, his bulbs are operated at low voltage for better illumination if used together. These lamps were operated in series on 110 volt circuits, resulted in higher overall efficacy compared with higher voltage lamps. Further, air was also allowed to reach the neck of the bulb thus preventing it reaching too high a temperature [11].
He devised many bases for his lamp to cope the needs of customer having different sockets, few specified in his patents are single pin push in base, two pin base, key and keyless base as depicted in figure
