The rights of citizens were protected by and important to, George Washington. The Neutrality Proclamation proves this statement, “The U.S. require that it should with sincerity and good faith adopt and pursue a conduct friendly and impartial toward both countries.” The United States would not support either side of the war, we would remain neutral. Washington identified that the people were unsure of which side to support so he made the decision to stay neutral. He kept the country safe and kept us from another war. The Alien and Sedition Acts proves that statement. The Sedition Act was, “Any persons...oppose the government shall be guilty of a crime.” The Alien Act was that, “Someone could be arrested or deported if they’re from a country the U.S. is at war with.” This act violated the 1st Amendment. Which is, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” It was disrespectful to a country of immigrants because it made it harder for them to become citizens and would keep them from voting.
