George Washington The Greatest President Essay

Throughout the 240 years the United States has been an independent country, there has been 43 different presidents, but of them all, the greatest has to be the first. George Washington was the first president of the United States from April 30, 1789 to March 4, 1797. Washington has maintained the title of greatest president in the United States thanks to his keen skills, perseverance through times of hardship, and his selflessness. Washington is the greatest president so far because of his leadership during the revolutionary war, his selflessness, and the fact that he had no guidelines on how to be the president of the United States. The Revolutionary War was in favor of Great Britain. Great Britain had more military personnel, a larger budget, and ultimately more experience, but the Americans were able to achieve victory thanks to George Washington's strong leadership. To fight the war, Washington had to raise the moral of his men because everyone knew it was a war they were going to loose. Once he convinced men to join the army, he had to figure out how he would beat a larger, and more experienced army. Washington could have easily become a monarch or dictator, but he sacrificed his power to set a precedent for future leaders. This denial of power was unheard of at the time of the United States' independence, and it was not only done by Washington once, but twice. Washington always wished he was never president, it was a hard job for him, but he knew he must do it to make sure future presidents would "behave".
