Ellis then moves on to talk about George Washington’s, elected to be president in 1789, retirement. He talks about how heroic Washington is and how he has been such a great leader. Unfortunately, on September 19, 1796 a Pennsylvanian newspaper published an open letter from Washington to the American public announcing his planned retirement. George Washington resigned his presidency and started the two term tradition. Washington's age was caching up to him, though many who criticized him thought he was resigning because he was becoming too old and weak. Washington resigned to keep the republic together and strong and by resigning he showed any president could be replaced. Ellis then talks about three important subjects in the advice he leaves
