One of the most iconic military and government figures in American history, George Washington, has set the example as well as the standard for the President of the United States of America and military leaders. Washington’s leadership characteristics can be broken down into many facets and styles which will be analyzed throughout this report.
Going through the list of characteristics of adaptive leadership Washington basically embodies all aspects of any of the characteristics. If we look at even just one battle fought by or with Washington, we can see that within that one fight there are many characteristics to choose from. He also shows how to set the example for his soldiers and show them to have courage and to never give up. Washington was well known for taking actions that an officer normally does not partake in, especially leading from the front of the fight, always watching and fixing deficiencies. One reason is that for the most part Washington’s life he had never received a sizable amount of actually military training and had to learn from experience and trial and error. Washington was known for adapting and being resilient when it came to styles of fighting. Usually accustom to fighting with a guerrilla warfare style, with a small number of troops and minimal supplies. While he was the Commander-in-Chief of the continental army, he knew little about the British style of open field fighting and how to control a large army with Calvary and artillery. However, Washington was able to stay a step ahead due to his drive and openness to tactics that would win the war.
