George Washington Carver was born in 1864, in the middle of the Civil War. His father was dead before George was born. His mother was stolen by bushwhackers, leaving him as an infant and his older brother Jim in the care of the kind Carvers. Mrs. Carver had lost her only daughter, so she was excited to have George and Jim to take care of. Since George couldn't go to school because of it being an only white school. He would learn from around him, he would climb trees, experiment on plants, and learned which bugs were helpful and which were not. He basically taught himself to read books from Mrs. Carver's trunk. He could recite an old spelling book and read Little Women. When he was 9 his neighbors called him “the Little Plant Doctor.” Because …show more content…
He taught both blacks and whites how to become better farmers. He made a cart that he could take with him to the poor farmers that couldn't afford school. One of the things he advised them to do, was to grow peanuts to ward off beetles and help their soil to regenerate nitrogen. Soon there was too many peanuts and the farmers were angry for having too many and not be able to do anything with them. George prayed and asked God what he should do. George says that God answered him by giving him a handful of peanuts and went to the Lab and they worked on it together. George found that he could make soap, oil, peanut butter, ink, and shoe polish. That was the inside of the peanut, the shell he made paper, paving bricks, or building blocks. When he was done he showed the farmers and they were overly happy, now that they other ways to use the peanut. George was famous back then too. He got about 150 letters everyday and he replied to them himself. Henry Ford became his life long friend. Thomas Edison would ask George to come work for him and would pay him $200,000, which George kindly declined. George was visited by the Prince of Whales and the Crown Prince of Sweden. Even the Russian Government asked for help for their land. George corresponded with Ghandi, the leader of India.
