George Washington was a true American hero and one a critical part of the foundation of the American Nation that we know and love today. Many people know the later story of the first president of the united states, but not many know of his origins and the time before he became a leading and key general in the Revolutionary War fighting for American independence. This research paper will outline the not only Washington’s background but also the important event he took part in leading up to the Revolutionary War.

The first child of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Ball Washington, George Washington was born on their Pope 's Creek Estate near present-day Colonial Beach in Westmoreland County, Virginia. According to the Julian calendar and Annunciation Style of enumerating years, Washington was born on February 11, 1731; the Gregorian calendar, adopted later within the British Empire in 1752, renders a birth date of February 22, 1732.
Washington was of primarily English gentry descent, especially from Sulgrave, England. His great-grandfather, John Washington, immigrated to Virginia in 1657 and began accumulating land and slaves, as did his son Lawrence and his grandson, George 's father, Augustine. Augustine was a tobacco planter who also tried his hand in iron-mining ventures.
