McDonaldization is a rationalization theory that came from George Ritzer. He came up with the term from increasing and ubiquitous presence of the fast food model in a vast number of organizations that include things we do on a daily basis that make our lives easier and flow faster. Ritzer got the idea because McDonald’s is based on a high demand and it still flows with efficient productivity. McDonaldization principles consist of efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. Steps in this process are broken down until the individualized tasks are very small and finding out the most efficient way to do that task. “We have become a nation driven by concerns for rationality, speed, and efficiency that are so well illustrated by McDonalds …show more content…
Efficiency is the steps of the production are the same and it is streamlined, this way all the products made are exactly the same. This is the step that makes everything flow faster with as very little trouble as possible. Getting things done rapidly with the least amount of cost and little effort because of the tasks being minimized to each person. For example, at McDonald’s, a worker is only stationed in a certain position so they do well on it instead of having them have different tasks and moving around. Minimizing time required to complete the whole operation or process of production or distribution. Now that it is more of a norm for families to have both parents working, it is much more efficient to go to a fast food restaurant than to cook at home because it is time consuming and it can also be cheaper. Fast food restaurants are also efficient because they have a menu with limited items that the back line routinely makes, making the process faster. Sometimes the main goal can be lost (bureaucrats) because they focus too much of the efficiency of the product, losing sight of the ultimate purpose. This means that the industry is too focused on getting products done quickly that they ignore the quality of it. Calculability is how the industry knows how much is demanded, how long it takes to make the product, and the cost of the product. It mostly has to do with numbers. …show more content…
It can be seen in leisure-time activities like camping. This is an example of McDonaldization because it used to be unpredictable on what would happen, not all camping trips would be the same. Now there are campsites with parking lots, paved sidewalks, clean campsites, and bathrooms ( Ritzer, 374). It can also be see in online shopping. It is efficient because anyone can go shopping in the comfort of their own home, it is predictable because the customer knows what they are going to receive in the mail. It can also be seen in social media, it is efficient because its fast, all a person has to do is get on an electronic and talk to someone on any given app. It can also be seen in education. Children in grade school are forced to all learn the same material and take the same classed despite their learning level and their background, because it is easier and more efficient than to have them all learning different things and mastering different
