George Polya's Ability To Make History In Our Family

We always wish to be someone famous, to make history in our family, but sometimes we do not think we have the ability to do so. George Polya is an all-time favorite mathematician born in Budapest, Hungary on December 13, 1887. Polya had a Jewish family that consisted of three brothers, two sisters, father and mother. He changed majors multiple times to find out the real subject that he was interested in. After he found his love for math George grew his knowledge to find an easier method to solve problems; he wrote How to Solve It. Like all families, the Polyas’ had a unique background. George Polya parents were Anna Deutsch and Jakab Polya they were both Jewish living in Budapest. During this time, in 1867, Hungary became a Monarchy. Keep in mind that Hungary was dominantly a Christian and the Polyas’ were Jewish. Therefore, in need of success the Jewish father changed his last name from Polak to Polya. The reason he did so was because Polak sounded more Jewish and Polya was a Hungarian last name. With the change of last name the chances of entering a university improved for Jakab. Right before George was born the family altered from a Jewish belief to a Catholic faith in 1886. George was then baptize as a Roman Catholic. At a young age, Polya never had an interest in math. He left his treasure for future generations with his crazy family background. Thanks to his father, Jakab, this astonishing mathematician made a mark in the mathematics world. It is beyond belief how even though his mind was not set of becoming a famous mathematician he became one.
