Interpretive Oral Presentation Transcript on “Nineteen Eighty Four” What were Winston Smith’s philosophical concerns toward his observance of human nature in society and the way people lived their life, in the context of the novel? In the text “Nineteen Eighty Four”, the way the human nature in society and the way people lived their lives was noticeably a concern for Winston. He saw that life was becoming too mechanical and that the loss of humanity was becoming a reality. A mechanical lifestyle involves the idea of conformity, where the population changes their behaviour in order to fit into the society.…
David Sussman talks about the physical pain and psychological distress when being tortured as it changes the point of view of the person being tortured causing them to betray themselves. We see this when Winston was being tortured as he was feeling extreme pain which led him to give up on himself and believe in the party’s beliefs and love Big Brother. Overall, Orwell talks about how the party manipulates society other than the language of Newspeak which is manipulation through torture. In Oceania, society is living in an oppressive world ruled by the oppressive dictator Big Brother and the party.…
D. Setting Native Son takes place in Chicago, during the post-Depression years, approximately in the 1930s. The opening scene of the novel takes place in a dusty, dark, and cramped apartment where Bigger and his mother and two siblings live. In a stark contrast, the Dalton family lives in a lavish household with multiple rooms and floors, and, upon entering, this makes Bigger uncomfortable. This prompts Bigger to say to one of his friends, "Goddamnit, look! We live here and they live there.…
George Orwell’s classic novel, 1984, has gone through the ages as a novel depicting a bleak future with a government in complete control over its citizen’s actions and thoughts. The novel explores the actions of Winston Smith, a questioner of the established Party or Big Brother. He and his lover Julia, another ardent critic of the Party, try to join the underground Brotherhood, a group, led by Emmanuel Goldstein, trying to take down the party. They get caught and in the end, O’Brien, a loyalist of the Party, brainwashes both of them into loving the party and Big Brother. 1984 Argument Paragraph(Change title) In the novel, 1984, by George Orwell, the Party will need to control the natural instincts of the citizens in order to maintain its control over the society of Oceania. To begin with, it is in our human nature to be engaged in freedom. Humans are born with the natural instinct to express their individuality with though their thoughts and ideas and express it in our lives.…
The English language is continually and slowly being eradicated by the way society tends to manipulate the way they word their statements. People continue to switch their words around to make sure that it seems favorable while the meaning behind it is deceiving. George Orwell is an important writer who believes that our writing is problematic because of our thoughts, which is caused by the slovenliness of the language itself. This is both true and false because sometimes you have to get to the point of your work without including fluff, while other times, larger words are necessary and make the person seem a lot more sophisticated.…
The "2+2=5" slogan occurred in George Orwell's book entitled "1984" referring to the control of the human mind by the Party. It symbolizes the psychological manipulation over people in order to create a false reality. The mathematical sentence is a slogan promoted by the Party as part of the dictatorship. In the short video, pupils in the classroom are forced to accept the fact that two plus two equals five according to the teacher's instructions. What's more, the constant repetition of the equation indicates how they are "brainwashed" to accept the deceiving reality.…
Body Paragraph 2: • Orwell indicates that may people interpret words differently from what the writer intended. • “Words… are often used in a consciously dishonest way. That is, the person who uses them has his own private definition, but allows his hearer to think he means something quite different” (Orwell 5). Body Paragraph 3: • Orwell understands what would not be said in regards to political writing. • “Consider for instance some comfortable English professor defending Russian totalitarianism.…
Society bases its morals and ideals on past successes and faults. A domesticated animal does not simply lose its animal instincts, in the same light, society cannot completely lose its negative qualities. The faults of a society in one time period can just as likely transgress into another society in the next, almost as easily as the tearing of a sheet of paper. The novel 1984 follows the plights of Winston Smith as he discovers the secrets of his society. In George Orwell’s 1984, Orwell uses language to admonish a dystopian future society plagued by a totalitarian government system that psychologically manipulates individuals through propaganda and intimidation.…
In George Orwell’s, Politics and the English Language, he claims that it is hard to write good pros, without out making major mistakes that could potentially lose the interest of the reader. Through the course of his text, Orwell proves that “Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided” (Orwell 2). With the problems that Orwell identifies as aides in making “Bad Pros”: Dying Metaphors, False Limbs, Pretentious Diction, and Meaningless Words all play a key role in the creation of unscrupulous English writing. Along the next paragraphs I will analyze articls in the style of Orwell that shows his claim to be correct.…
In Orwell’s writings he often writes about an attack on the evils of tyranny. Very often his writings have an entity that rules over all. These writings show that a system of tyranny creates a society that does not progress, rather, it regresses. For example, his essay “Shooting An Elephant” portrays the idea about imperialism, another prime example of a system of tyranny. Due to imperialism, Europeans have been driven to thoughts of anger and hatred towards the anti-Europeans, which consist of Burmans and Buddhists.…
Mind Control What if the destruction of language and the past can be used as tools to manipulate the minds of people? In the novel 1984, by George Orwell, this is exactly what is happening. Winston, who works in the ministry of truth in Oceania erases the past by rewriting it. It is a vile world in Oceania when even a movement on your face is enough to be vaporized.…
(pg 53) Orwell’s decision to have the government enforce a new language would take away the past language from its citizens in order to shape them into a specific model. With each new edition, the vocabulary shrinks and leads to the fact that “…Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year.” (pg 51) As Orwell’s limited language only allows specific thoughts, it forces other thoughts dissolve into history and past generations. It is nearly impossible for society to think of a thought, when there are no words that have any close meaning to that thought and “in the end we shall make thought-crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.” (pg 52) Orwell decision on selective vocabulary for Newspeak, such as the removing frilly and…
Summary of “Politics and the English Language” by George Orwell Orwell immediately addresses his concern for the decline in the English language. He calls it “ugly” and “stale.” This decline in language induces “foolish” thinking, which, in turn, leads to more ugly language. It is a vicious cycle. However, Orwell suggests that this is a reversible process, considering there is enough people willing to get the job done.…
Orwell makes the comparison of the English language to a drunken man. The alcoholic man drinks because he feels he has failed, but after drinking the man realizes he has failed even more. The English language tends to fall into this cycle. We are failing as writers and we know this but we are not doing anything to fix the problem.…
