Every year, each of the districts (but not the Capitol) is required to send one randomly selected boy and girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the media spectacle that is the Hunger Games. Each district is fighting for food, and murdered seems to be the only solution to their need. This society functions under fear because they are all constantly being controlled and watched, much like the society in Orwell’s 1984. Each home in the districts are required to have a tv screen that broadcast news, and live feed during the hunger games. The people cannot turn off the tv, and they cannot choose when to turn in on. This is all controlled by the government, who inflicts fear upon the people in each district, forcing them to obey the rules and laws that they live
