George Orwell was a famous author most known for his works Animal Farm and 1984. In these books, Orwell makes it very clear what point he is trying to convey. Orwell is stating his opinion on Russia under communist rule during the Stalin era. Animal Farm was published in 1945 and 1984 was published in 1849. During this time in Russia, Stalin was in power and had carved Russia in his image. Orwell bases Animal Farm and 1984 in the image of Stalin’s Russia and the shows the repercussions of communism.
Orwell’s Animal Farm is a political fairy tale about Manor Farm ran by Mr. Jones. The animals on the farm were living in dreadful conditions under the control of Mr. Jones, so the animals rose up against the farmer. Three pigs: Napoleon, Snowball,

Toward the beginning of the book after the animals overthrew Mr. Jones, Snowball designed a flag to represent Animal Farm. The flag is described as (Quote), as for the Communist flag of Russia, the background is pure red and at the top left corner there is a hammer and sickle crossing over with a single star on top all in yellow, as can be seen in figure 2. The hammer and sickle are representing the industrial workers in Russia, where as the star above represents the communist leaders looking over the population. The main character, Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth where he rewrites history. In this society there is an all superior leader Big Brother. “Big Brother is watching you” (Orwell 1984 2) is a common known statement, this practically means that every person is being watched at all times. This party has three slogans: “war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength” (Orwell, 1984 4). These slogans are what hold this totalitarian system together and keeps the people under control. Soon Winston begins to realize how the society is corrupt and writes his thoughts down in a journal. Having these kind of thoughts and writing them down are both punishable by death, but Winston continues to do so. Winston later meets Julia who he later has sexual interaction with outside of marriage. Soon after O’Brien, a member of the thought police, arrests them and continues to torture them. In the end Winston and Julia are turned back into members of the party and go on as if nothing happened. Throughout the book Orwell points toward Stalin’s Russia and how it is like living under his
