Big Brother is watching you” (Orwell 2); one of the most iconic lines in George Orwell’s novel, 1984. In the book, Big Brother represented the constant surveillance of citizens through “telescreens,” where members of the party could manipulate the way people lived in Orwell’s fictional country of Oceania. Today, citizens could almost be watched through video surveillance cameras conveniently set up by their own police authorities and government around their city or town 24/7. If you think about it, how is this any different from Orwell’s Oceania? Is our technology taking us closer to the world of Big Brother?
Modern technology is far more advanced than anything Orwell had described in his novel 1984. However, there are some shocking similarities between our technology and the world of Big Brother. If you were to go to a grocery store, restaurant, gas station, or shopping centers, you will see surveillance cameras set up around the perimeter. Of course we know these cameras were set up for our safety, but is that all our government uses them for? “Charges of newspeak are sometimes advanced when a group tries to replace a word/phrase (e.g. "murder") with a politically correct or inoffensive one (e.g. "collateral damage")” (Real-Life examples of Newspeak). The government is already manipulating worldwide news and using “politically correct” phrases to make offensive situations seem not as serious to society. How are we supposed to react to words we do not think twice about because they are not in our daily
