Serge Savard’s famous “Spin o Rama” could easily be compared to a pirouette done by a ballerina. One could infer that Savard’s spin is even harder than a pirouette as a ballerina “does not have a so-called goon chasing after him” (159) at a speed of 40 kilometres an hour. Would it be offensive to say that the movements of hockey players are the inspiration for new movements in ballet? Well, some of you may be asking, how does this have anything to do with the development of our identity? Paul Henderson’s inclusion of this comparison highlights the significance of hockey in Canada as a stepping stone to the progression of other art forms.…

The physics behind popping an ollie is very interesting, and after teaching my friends, and kids that I babysit how to skate, there are a lot of common misconceptions to what really happens when someone ollies.…

As teenagers growing up in Powder Springs, Georgia during the 1980’s, it was somewhat challenging at times to find safe and entertaining ways to occupy our time. Even though we did not have free reign to do as we chose, I would not categorize my parents as extremely strict. Relying on our parents, as if they were our personal taxi service, my sister and I struggled to find activities relatively close to home. After discovering we really enjoyed skating, we spent countless Friday and Saturday nights at the Sparkles Skating Rink in Paulding County. The indoor facility was a safe environment for teenagers, which provided my parents with a certain level of comfort to allow us to gather with friends.…

I thought I knew Jonalyn well, but not enough to know where she came from, who her parents were or recognize her childhood struggles that led to her triumphs that sparked her determination through life. Through this interview, I have come to know more about Joni girl then what I thought I knew about her. Jonalyn Kaufmann’s life provides a perspective of what it would be like to grow up as a Japanese-German female in Central Oahu around 1960s through the late 1970s. Her life provides an understanding of what it was like to feel the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor bombing and a time of Hitler’s reign through prejudice taunts in school because of her ethnicity.…

I couldn’t believe that I was stuck in boring old Pulaski, Virginia. What a perfect place to run out of gas on the annual trip from West Virginia to Florida.
