When they arrived at the ranch, they were greeted by Candy. Candy was an old man who had lost his hand in a ranch accident. He had an old dog to help him out, the dog had no name. He accidentally broke the puppy's neck and was hiding it from George. Lennie was scared and nervous because if George found out he wouldn’t let Lennie take care of the rabbits on their farm. Then Curley’s wife came in and tried to flirt with him, but she found the dead pup and got scared and started to scream. Lennie tried to keep her quiet, but he broke her neck. He left to go to the creek where he and George had spent the night before they arrived at the ranch. George had told him to go there if there was any trouble. When Curley’s wife’s body was discovered in the barn, a mob formed to go after Lennie. George knew they would kill Lennie if they found him. George took Carlson’s luger and went to find Lennie before the others could get there. He found Lennie and told him the story about their farm where Lennie can raise and take care of the rabbits. George cried because he knew what he had to do and then he shot Lennie in the back of the head. Just like Candy and his faithful dog, George felt like he should be the one to put Lennie down before anyone else could harm
