George Milton Loneliness

Loneliness is sadness because one has no friends or company. In the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, one of the main themes is loneliness. George Milton is the loneliest character in the book. He’s a lonely ranch worker moving from job to job, his only friend is mentally challenged, and has to kill his only friend. George is lonely because he’s a ranch worker. Ranch workers have no family and move from job to job. “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place. They come to a ranch and work up a stake, and first thing you know they go and blow their stake, and next thing you know they’re poundin their tails on some other ranch. They ain’t got nothing to look forward to”(pg 13). George’s only friend and companion was Lennie Small. He had to kill his only friend, because Lennie had killed someone and the whole ranch was after him. “ George raised the gun and his hand shook and he dropped his hand to the ground again”(pg 105). George didn’t want to be completely alone. “George raised the gun and steadied it. He brought the muzzle close to the back of Lennie’s head. His hand shook violently, but his face set and he steadied it. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and down again. Lennie jarred, and settled slowly forward in the sand, and he lay without quivering”(pg 106). Now George is the loneliest character in the book. At the end of the book Carlson said “Now what you suppose is eatin them two guys?”(pg107). Loneliness is what is “eating” them.
George Milton is the loneliest character is the book “Of Mice and Men”. He’s a ranch worker, they have no family or friends jumping from job to job. His only friend was mentally challenged, so he had no one to really talk to, and in the end of the book he had to shoot his only
