After the release of Star Wars, people simply could not get enough of the film. Everything imaginable was created for the film, such as toys, collectables, t-shirts and much more. In addition, Star Wars became a major promotional influence for restaurants, and magazines. Fast food restaurants such as Burger King offered Star Wars themed glasses that would be given out with meals. This was advertised through commercials, and was extremely popular during the initial release of the film. The major marketing machine fueled by Star Wars was merchandise however. When George Lucas sold the toy merchandising rights to a company known as Kenner, the company could not supply enought toys for the demand at the time. They would quickly sell out, and the toys were very popular in households everywhere. Clearly, Star Wars was more than a movie, and to many it became much more than the merchandise too. Ultimately, Star Wars created a fan fair that was unprecedented at the time. It became one of the most popular films around, and could easily be seen as the beginning of the modern fan fair.
