George states, “Guess...we gotta tell the… guys. I guess we gotta get ‘im an’ lock ‘im up. We can’t let ‘im get away. Why the poor bastard’d starve.” The hesitation in Georges words show that he doesn’t actually believe that Lennie would be treated with care or respect if he were put away. Slim explains to George that he wouldn’t be treated well and wipes away all of his wishful thinking. Slim states, “An’ s’pose they lock ‘im up an’ strap ‘im down and put him in a cage. That ain’t no good, George.” Slim knows that Lennie would be tortured in prison.
Because Lennie would continue to cause trouble, he would have gone painfully at the hands of Curley, and being put away wouldn’t be better for him.
