Many of these beneficial and harmful effects are described in George Hill’s article, 4 Ways Facial Recognition Could Impact Society. One beneficial effect of facial recognition technology is the ability to fight crime better. In Qingdao, China, police were able to identify 25 wanted criminals using cameras with FRT (facial recognition technology). This would positively benefit society because there would be less dangerous criminals on the loose, making it safer for other people during their everyday lives. FRT would allow the police to catch these dangerous criminals before they even have time to cause harm to the rest of society. One harmful effect, also highlighted in George Hill’s 4 Ways Facial Recognition Could Impact Society is that the facial recognition software is not perfect yet, and can therefore still have errors and cause problems. If there is not 100% accuracy, innocent people could be unintentionally identified as criminals or criminals could pass under the radar, unidentified by the police. This problem is also extended by the fact that people’s appearances change constantly, such as their hair, weight and what they are wearing, and even though some software claims to account for these changes, they are very hard to account for with 100%
