Who remembers George Jones and Merle Haggard? George and Merle had their own style of music. They sang the traditional kind of music, but you don’t hear it that much these days. Country music today is going towards the pop genre and it’s not like it was in the 1970’s or even 1980’s. There’s one certain guy who has his own twists to music, his own style of the traditional era and has kept it around for as long as most people can remember. Most people call him “King George”, but he’s really much more than that. For the next decade, he would produce number one albums which included, Strait from the Heart in 1982, Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind in 1984, Something Special in 1985, Ocean Front Property in 1987, and Beyond the Blue Neon in 1989. These albums were either certified platinum or multi-platinum. Ocean Front Property, his ninth album, hit the number one spot on billboards country music charts, the first album to do so in history. He received male vocalist of the year award for three consecutive years in 1984 to 1986 and again in 1988.
In 1986, George Strait’s daughter, Jenifer, was killed in an automobile accident that killed her on impact. George, Norma and their five year old son set up The Jenifer Lynn Foundation in her honor that still goes on today.
In 1989, George Strait was named the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year which he also received in 1990. In 1991, he starred in the movie The Solider. In 1992, George Strait starred in the movie Pure Country as Dusty Chandler, which gave him his hit songs of “I Cross my Heart”, “Heartland”, “Where the Sidewalk Ends” and “The King of Broken Hearts “. The opening credits of Pure Country are sung by George’s son, Bubba. George Strait also starred in the sequel of Pure Country in 2010, but he didn’t play Dusty, he played himself.
