George H. W. Bush's Influence On Iraq

George H.W Bush promised that there would be no new taxes, but as the national debt increased, Bush called for new taxes and urged people to reduce spending. This outraged many conservatives and people who had voted for him in hopes of lower taxes. As a result of the soaring tax rates, the economy fell into a recession in 1981. Unemployment rates went up and many businesses went bankrupt. I don’t think Bush handled this well at all. He broke the promise that got him the presidency to millions of hopeful Americans. During his presidency, Bush launched a full-scale air assault and ground invasion against Iraq as part of the Persian Gulf War in retaliation to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. The United States quickly intervened for a number of reasons. By invading Kuwait, Saddam Hussein gained control over a vast amount of the world's oil supply, which gave him the potential to wreak havoc with U.S. energy policy and oil prices. Since the Persian Gulf …show more content…
During his administration, more than 22 million jobs were created in less than eight years. As a direct result of this, unemployment dropped from more than 7 percent in 1993 to just 4 percent in 2000. America went from having the largest budget deficit in American history ($290 billion) in 1992 (when Clinton was elected) to having a budget surplus of $127 billion when he left office in 2001. But it seems that Clinton receives too much credit for this because the economy was already booming when he took office. Although his contribution to the economic status of the nation was questionable, he did other positive things. The crime rate fell every year that Clinton was president and was at a 26-year low by the end of his two terms. He got funding for 100,000 new police officers nationwide. He signed a bill requiring a waiting period and background check to purchase handguns. Clinton's 1994 Crime Bill included a ban on assault weapons, and there was a 40 percent decline in gun crime by

In “How a Democrat Killed Welfare” by Premilla Nadasen we read about Bill Clinton, former Democratic President of the U.S. and how while in office, he essentially destroyed welfare in the U.S. Firstly, I just wanted to say that I was very surprised that this article was in the course packet, considering that this is a sociology class; and I’d assume most if not all sociologists are Democrats. I found it surprising to see an article slamming Democrats. After Clinton was elected in 1992, many people breathed a sigh of relief as they thought the the horrors of the Reagen-Bush era were over.…

Americans facing unemployment and new taxes in the early 1990s definitely caused George H. W. Bush to lose his bid to be re-elected in the 1992 election. Many U.S. citizens felt betrayed after Bush agreed to a tax increase despite his promise: “read my lips, no new taxes!” This hurt him a great deal. Not only that, but Bush, a very rich man, seemed very unrelatable toward the American people. He was glaringly out of touch because he had been government for decades, losing touch with day to day life in America (It’s known that Bush was amazed by a checkout-line scanner, a gadget already familiar to most at the time).…

The United States’ decision to invade Iraq was both a great move and a bad move for several different reasons. The United States invaded Iraq in March of 2003. They invaded Iraq because there were thoughts that Saddam Hussein was manufacturing chemical and nuclear weapons. One of the reasons this invasion was a smart move was because killing Hussein was only a good move and could have no negative outcome for the Americans. Another reason that it was a smart move to invade Iraq was that if the Americans defeated them, it could potentially end terrorism in part of the Middle East.…
