The majority of large animation producers of the time were drafted in to produce informational films for a number of different aspects of the war effort. Animation was now being sought after as a form of motivating and explaining in an engaging manner due to its relatively simplistic nature of the time (Solomon, 1994). It seemed that animation had begun to move away from the notion that it could only be used as a form of entertainment. It was now being utilized for its ability to convey information. Delgaudio (1997) claims that animations were effectively filling this role because they are watched more attentively than live action film or lectures.…

Bernstein’s Symphonic Suite from “On The Waterfront” commences with an eerie introduction. Initially, I heard the sound of the single french horn which gives a mysterious feeling. Soon after some brass and woodwind instruments are also building that tone. Then, I heard the piano and the percussions start to crescendo and build tension as if something is about to occur. The tempo and dynamic of the symphonic suite increases and around the five minute mark the eerie and haunting sense returns.…

The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” Meets “The Lion King” Two Stories of Revenge To take a classic Shakespearian tragedy and turn it into a children's film seems almost beyond comprehension, however I intend to show how just that was accomplished with “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” by William Shakespeare and “The Lion King” a movie produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. These media, classic play and animated children's film, are not as far separated as many may think. Each starts with a story they wish to tell. Each needs to make that story interesting to their targeted audience and each strives to make the point of their story comprehensible enough that their audience…

Summertime, from the folk opera Porgy and Bess, is a haunting, languid melody created by the highly esteemed American composer and pianist, George Gershwin. Gershwin was one of the twentieth-century’s most influential, beloved composers, and a multitalented musical genius. He composed numerous orchestral works for piano and jazz orchestra, and created popular musical compositions for several stage works and films. Gershwin’s most famous piece, however, is undoubtedly Rhapsody in Blue. I have admired and revered Gershwin’s musical virtuosity for the greater portion of my life; thus, I was ecstatic when my piano instructor chose Rhapsody in Blue as my senior recital piece.…

The Planets is the most successful and arguably the best recognized composition of Gustav Holst. Although Gustav composed some outstanding works after The Planets, none of them achieved recognition of the same level as The Planets. The Planets was composed while Holst was working as a music master. Holst had done some works before The Planets, which he considered as failures and such failures made him desperately think of a genre topic that could be phenomenal for his ideas of composition of music. Gustov once stated, “The enormity of the universe revealed by science cannot readily be grasped by the human brain, but the music of The Planets enables the mind to acquire some comprehension of the vastness of space where rational understanding fails.”…

Filmmakers tied that classical music with these animations to bring the audience into the whimsical world of prehistoric times, nature, Heaven and Hell, and all of the other beautiful backgrounds for this choreographed animation. It is hard to believe that all of the animations for this film were hand drawn before going to the computer to bring them to life unlike how animations today are almost always done on the computer. Something else that has changed since the past is the completion of films. Nowadays, films are completed months in advance and have screenings and red carpets but for Fantasia, the film was not completed until 4 hours before the first showing.…

Music in film can have many purposes. It can change the mood of the audience, alert them to danger, or even be used to give exposition of the story to the audience. The latter, along with its variation, such as a monologue delivered in song, are used to create musicals--a genre used by Disney since its very beginning. For this journal I watched Disney’s Moana to see how it used music to move the plot, and influence its audience.…
