The first song they played was one of my favorites. It was All of me. I have this song on my playlist. I had never heard it live before. While hearing this I noticed a few things. Of course it was a little different. Because it was live it had a different timbre. It was a little more sombre to me. I think because they had not played it for more than a few months, they did not play it with much confidence. It was not too loud and not too bright. Still sounded good though. Later on in some of the other songs they had different timbres. The instruments did not really change but, in a few of the songs they used mutes. I do not know they different types of mutes, but I did hear the difference and see them. I like it when they use the mutes. It is like they play with a different instrument, it changes that much. As for instrumentation, throughout the whole concert they used trumpets, trombones, and saxophones for frontline, and bass, piano, and drums for the rhythm section. That did not mean that's all they did. The bass even had a solo in one of the small group sessions. I liked it. I never heard a bass …show more content…
Also occasionally the other instruments would play along with the harmony. The rhythms were not super complicated in all of the songs. Some of them were slow others went faster, because they played songs from different eras and styles of jazz. Some were more like bebop and I wanted to dance others were not. Nothing too complex, but also some of the songs had more difficult and changing rhythms. I was happy with the variety in the concert. The whole concert had some pretty strong melodies. There was quite a bit of solos. The director even mentioned that these pieces allowed the students more opportunities for solo opportunities and create their own melodies. I was a fan. I could hear thee young artists working to put their own style on the melodies. It was pretty cool. I like the idea that these individuals are working so hard and now their onstage and get to put their own stamp on jazz. The form was fairly basic from what I could tell. Some blues, and typical AABA or AAB. Also, from what I could tell is the texture was mostly homophonic. One melody and the rest harmony. I think maybe in the more big band part of the performance there may have been polyphonic, but I am unsure because that is the hardest thing for me to tell. Overall, I think that these factors lead me to perceive the character as fun. It was a group of students who got to show off what they have been working on. I think it showed
