He is innocent and no ability to understand abstract concepts like death, he often does not mean to do the things that get him into trouble, and once he does get into trouble, he has no idea to define his actions in terms of guilt. Lennie only gets it when he says: "George is going to give me hell" or "George won't let me tend the rabbits." Lennie has these thing for soft things it is like a security kinda of like a little kid with his or her blanket or stuffed toy, it helps Lennie feel safe and that no bad could happen, but what happened in Weed was different well Lennie saw the red dress that looked soft he had to feel it but when the lady screamed he did not know what to do so he just held onto it, he really did not mean it.
