In today’s environment, the Army needs leaders who can lead a complex organization, through complex issues, to get at a complex problem that may not have a right answer. Strategic leaders are asked to lead in an environment that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. T. Owen Jacobs wrote about these in Strategic Leadership; The Competitive Edge and thus coined the term VUCA. “I don’t think I am exaggerating when I say that we face the most daunting strategic environment in generations.” The US Army War College (USAWC) is the institution that is tasked with training today’s strategic leaders.…

General Shelton didn’t display many vulnerabilities based on the biography I read for this course. However, there were several areas that some may consider some of his decisions as vulnerabilities where I would consider them more of prioritization of urgencies. General Shelton in my opinion placed a huge value in his profession but an even more higher value in family. General Shelton understood the importance of succeeding in his career while making national security decisions, but he also found it of important value to balance and attend to his family.…
Roosevelt’s leadership philosophy involved charity or love, service and duty. He believed in common sense and practicality. During the 1936 Democratic convention, Roosevelt said, “to some generations much is given of other generations much is expected. It takes a lot for an average person to swallow their pride and admit when they are wrong, but it garners outstanding respect for those who take responsibility. In the book Extreme Ownership, the authors, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, express the crucial need for leaders to take ownership in a situation. Extreme Ownership was written with the purpose to recommend and provide detailed examples of successful leadership traits. The book is written from the perspective of two Navy SEALs, who use their leadership examples from combat to drive home the main argument of taking responsibility even in the most adverse of circumstances. I believe this book was written not to make the point that this is how leadership should be, but rather that these…

During this time George noticed that leaders tend to have a crucible moment. That crucible moment challenges everything about a leader.
