Azerbaijan is a small nation that borders Russia, Georgia, Turkey, and Armenia. Azerbaijan and Armenia have conflict due to Nagorno-Karabakh; and area of land located within Azerbaijan however Armenia believes that it belongs to them. In this essay, I will be writing about the geopolitical dilemmas and the best situation for Azerbaijan to be in. The conflict goes on for a long time, which resulted in many civilians dying on both nations. Despite Azerbaijan being in a bad situation, it has two options whether they should join Iran and Russia or continue close ties with the West. During the conflict, Azerbaijan and Turkey assisted with one another due to the fact that they belong to the European Union and because Azerbaijan had a gas pipeline that runs through Turkey and near the Caspian Sea. On the other hand, Armenia was assisted by Russia and Iran. Iran and Russia have a hostile relationship with Azerbaijan …show more content…
Some of the benefits include, Russia and Iran will likely be less hostile to Azerbaijan. Russia will not get involved in their conflict with Armenia and Iran will not fund terrorist networks to terrorize Azerbaijan, and etc. They will not have to worry about terrorist attacks from Iran. The downside of Azerbaijan will ally with Russia and Iran is that they will lose the protection from the United States. They will not be able to sell its oil to the West and buy weapons from Israel to defend itself from other countries. On the other hand if Azerbaijan decides to side with the West, they will receive protection from the West. The US will be able to place bases for their protection and receive assistance. They will make profit from their oil. This will mean a stronger economy for Azerbaijan that will create jobs for the people. The downside is that Russia and Iran will be more hostile towards Azerbaijan that will lead to more
