The ancient Greeks were masters in learning and teaching. Many of their teachings are still evident in our world today. The knowledge they had also led to the ancient Greeks being a powerful and important society in the ancient world. The ancient Greeks were extremely intelligent and valued learning in their culture. The Greeks developed advanced forms of geometry. As seen in document 3, the Greek mathematician Euclid created a book of geometry called the Elements. In document 3 an excerpt of the book is shown where definitions for geometry are written, such as, “An obtuse angle is one greater than a right angle”. These definitions showed how the Greeks valued learning because people could read the book to learn about geometry. Additionally, the learning of the Greeks could help people’s professions. According to document 2, the doctor Hippocrates created the Hippocratic Oath to promise to treat patients with procedures they, “consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is [harmful].” The learning of the Greeks influenced many civilizations afterwards. The Elements wasn’t the first book on geometry, but it was the first to collect all of the ideas about geometry at the time into on book. This book is still used to teach geometry today, and is constantly being referenced. As shown in Document 3, the work included definitions such as, “And a line is a length without width.” Also, the book covered topics such as geometry and numbers and included definitions and theorems for each topic. Geometry is important in our world today because it is used in important professions such as making maps or surveying.
