Geology Personal Statement

I began college with an idea that I enjoyed the physical and social sciences. After taking archaeology and geology, I fell in love with both and learned that I could combine the two disciplines in a variety of careers. Geology has such a wide range of topics and career concentrations and this drew me to the profession. Geoarchaeology has been my focus over the past few years, but my interests have extended to soil health and geological disaster mitigation. Before any of this can be studied, one must have a deep understanding of the processes of the Earth and how this can influence what we see today. Looking for a field camp, I wanted a camp that would not only provide this knowledge, but also an experience completely different from what I have done in the past. …show more content…
The opportunity to learn Scotland’s history and geology is unique and being able to learn geology in such a diverse place would enhance the experience. While I love my home state, Nebraska is certainly not known for its diverse geology and I will need experience studying a variety of landscapes in order to succeed in my future career. Learning mapping at the University of St. Andrews would provide the knowledge and skills to create geologic maps throughout my career, whether I am reading the landscape to understand past geological environments as an archaeologist or using technology to map landscapes for future use as a soil conservationist. Field camp is not only an opportunity for field training, but also a chance to meet new people and experience a different culture and history from my

On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves.…

This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I shall always remember my first year working at Turkey Hill Ranch. I have always possessed an enduring fondness of the lovely church camp over all the years I’ve spent there as a camper, but I never imagined that its unique nature and pleasant atmosphere would impart such invaluable wisdom. This quiet and seemingly insignificant breadth of woods and field, tucked away amongst the encompassing depths of central Missouri, gave me an abundance of clarity on the exceeding importance of humility, service to others, and a bit of hard work in the composition of effective stewardship. Before becoming a part of the Summer staff at Turkey Hill, I was often impressed at the smooth and continuous operation of the camp week after week, being that it was…

The trip to a camping site in the middle of a Pennsylvania forest- a trip I would never forget- lead me to the discovery of myself and my transition into adulthood. This trip was through the summer camp I have attended for now eleven years; Liberty Lake Day Camp located in Columbus, New Jersey, is my second home. I grew up in this camp, and when I finally reached the age to become a L.I.T, a leader in training, I was eager to undergo the program with my friends I always attended camp with. This trip was a reward to all the hard work we do as L.I.Ts. Little did I know the annual L.I.T trip to the camping site would be life changing.…
