Geographic Determinism is when you have a favorable climate zone, healthy nutritious crops, and large domesticated mammals. Jared Diamond went to Papua New Guinea. He met a guy named Yali. Yali asked Diamond “Why do you white men have so much cargo, and we New Guineans have so little?” Diamond started thinking about this question. He started to analyze their lifestyle and compared it to other countries. He noticed that they were hunter-gatherers, had no large domesticated animals, and their crops were low on protein. He concluded that locations that are geographically lucky are bound to be more successful than those who are not. Geography does determine a society’s ability to become wealthy because if a country has nutritious crops, hard-working people in a favorable climate, and large domesticated animals, it is bound to be successful.
One of the key aspects supporting this theory is that if a country has nutritious crops, it will be able to engage in trade, due to the demand of nutritious crops in other countries. Jared Diamond noticed that in history, farming areas would domesticate crops by selecting individual plants for use in breeding the next year's crops to increase the harvest. “People were favoring the seeds that were the biggest, …show more content…
Sam Tanzer acknowledged that a country's climate affects their work ethic. “I won't answer the original question other than to say that ‘If I saw a six-month Swedish winter coming around, I'd be pretty quick to get my act together and start laying in supplies.” This shows that the climate affects how hard people in a climate work. Sam Tanzer also stated “This simply means that people in warmer regions get chronically sick much more often than other region. Thus affecting their productivity.” This shows
