occasionally wonder about where he or she was born, about their education, their family,
and even their life experiences. When I was in the fourth grade I got to thinking
about and researching a person I was learning about in Social Studies and found out from
my grandpa Teal that George Rogers Clark is an ancestor of mine. I thought that was
pretty neat and always wonder how many more famous historians or writers I could be
related to. Through my research on Geoffery Chaucer, I know that he is not an
ancestor of mine, but whoever is related to him has one interesting ancestor. Geoffery

Geoffery’s father owned a winery and during his
childhood he attended St. Paul’s Cathedral school which he studied the writings of Virgil
and Ovid. Moving on to Geoffery Chaucer’s teenage years, in 1359 he went off to fight
in the one hundred year war in France. In the war he was a P.O.W. and King Edward III
paid his ransom to set him free. After King Edward III paid his ransom Geoffery
Chaucer than went to work for him in the royal court. Seven years later, Geoffery
Chaucer married a woman named Phillippa Roet, which helped further his career with
King Edward III. She passed away in 1387. After Chaucer started working for King
Edward III, he began his writing career. He retired from working in the royal court in the
1390’s, however he continued to write his creative writings up through the time he died.
He died in his own home in London, England on West Minister Avenue on October 25th,
1400. Geoffery Chaucer was then buried at St. Mary’s Chapel West Minister Grave.
