Our journal sheds a light on gentrification, due to the fact that it is a “newly” and under-represented topic. Our team has specifically focused on the Gentrification of Astoria in areas including 30th ave, Steinway, Ditmars, and Broadway. Before we dive deeply into the issue we will first correctly define the term “Gentrification”. Many individual equate the term with a negative connotation. Gentrification is usually considered to possess a negative connotation with rich outsiders displacing members of poor community members. In Rashad's case, Gentrification influenced his business in a more positive manner. The new store renovations and items meant more business and increase of profit for business owner Rashad. In regards to Catherine, Gentrification didn't favor her or the other children in her community. The addition of modern and bougie project like “Astoria Cafe” meant no hangout site for Catherine and her peers to bond over. Catherine and her community members could no longer indulge in a snack (like they used to) after school due to the cafes over priced
