In the plays Julius Caesar and A Midsummer’s Night Dream by William Shakespeare, supernatural elements and love influence both Brutus and the lovers. Supernatural elements comprise a huge portion of both plays. A supernatural event that affects Brutus occurs when the ghost of Caesar appears before Brutus in his tent and warns Brutus that “[he] shal[l] see [him] at Philippi” (Julius Caesar 4.3.327). The ghost of Caesar frightens Brutus, causing his blood to go cold. He wants to talk more with Caesar’s ghost, but the ghost disappears.…

On Wednesday March 8th, I attended Portland State University’s production of The Bacchae. The play was originally written by Euripides, but was translated from the original Greek by William Arrowsmith. This production was directed Richard Wattenberg. I found the show was very well down and did enjoy it overall, however there were some elements that didn’t seem to work within the production. The areas that I will be focusing on in my analysis of the production will be, acting, costumes, set design, and audience.…

Many stories reflect a work of Shakespeare’s in some way or another. One story that I remember comparing to Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, was “The Outsiders”. Both center around two groups that despise each other, in “Romeo and Juliet” it was the Montagues and the Capulets, and in “The Outsiders” those groups are the Socs and the Greasers. One theme in Shakespeare’s play is that hatred and fighting will bring tragedies. This is evident when Johnny dies in the book.…

Lear and Gloucester suffer in similar ways and their respective children are either guilty of similar unkindness or victims of sibling rivalry. If, as Bradley claims, it is the case that King Lear is the only play where the main plot and sub-plot mirror each other so closely, presumably it is not just by chance. Many critics, and audiences, refer to the unrelieved sense of cruelty and bleakness that pervades the play. Madmen lead the blind, siblings kill each other and fathers are denied the affections of those they love most. The cruelty inflicted on Lear in the final scene, where he seems to believe that Cordelia may somehow still be alive, is heart-wrenching.…

Romeo and Juliet has many elements of romance and tragedy, but some people argue that it is more of a romance than a tragedy. How can Romeo and Juliet be a romance if they were doomed from the start? Romeo and Juliet is more of a tragedy than a romance because their relationship was kept secret, they were not able to love each other to their full potential and they both commit suicide at the end due to a misunderstanding caused by one mistake. The first reason Romeo and Juliet is more of a tragedy than a romance is because they kept their relationship a secret. Because the Capulets and Montagues were enemies, Romeo and Juliet thought it was best to keep their love for each other and marriage hidden.…
